Djoon Paris Guide: House Music, Crowd, Dress Code, Getting There

· Updated:

Djoon is a house music club at 22 boulevard Vincent Auriol, by the quai de la Gare in Paris's 13th arrondissement, open since 2003. It plays soulful, deep and afro house with disco and soul, opens on Friday and Saturday nights and some holiday eves, and nights usually start at 11pm.

A house club, not a techno club

Paris has plenty of places for techno. Djoon is where people go for house in the American sense of the word: the warm, vocal, soul-rooted sound that came out of New York, Chicago and Detroit. Since 2003 the club has brought over DJs from those cities and from Berlin and London, and Time Out Paris names Louie Vega, Theo Parrish and Tony Humphries among them. If those names mean something to you, you'll understand the room straight away. If they don't, expect long, melodic sets with real songs in them and a crowd that has come to dance. The club was founded and is still run by Afshin Assadian, and his son Adrien now helps with the programming, which partly explains why it has kept such a clear identity for over twenty years.

The room and the crowd

Djoon is a big loft on two floors with a glass front facing the quai de la Gare, close to the BnF library. It doesn't feel like a basement: the space is open and the street is right there behind the glass. The club press talks about an intimate dancefloor, a well-tuned sound system and a loyal crowd that comes for the music rather than the hype, and that matches its reputation. The November line-ups mix long-standing names with newer collectives such as DiscoStormy and Make House Deep Again, so the room isn't stuck in the past. It's a good choice for a mixed group that wants to dance without the hard edge of a techno night. It's also one of the older addresses on this stretch of the river: Djoon opened in 2003, while FVTVR, under the Cité de la Mode, and Phantom, under the Accor Arena across the Seine, both opened in 2023. Twenty-odd years in, it still plays the music it started with.

What to wear, getting there and getting home

Djoon doesn't publish a dress code. The crowd dresses to dance, so wear something comfortable and shoes you can move in for five hours. To get there, take metro line 6 to Quai de la Gare, which is the closest station; Gare d'Austerlitz (metro and RER) and bus 89 are also nearby. Going home, the RATP gives the last metro at about 2:15am at the end of the line on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before public holidays, and about 1:15am on other nights. Since nights here often go on until 5:30am, you'll usually be on a Noctilien night bus (roughly 12:30am to 5:30am, Navigo valid), in a taxi or on the first metro. Djoon is also a natural stop on a night along the Seine: Petit Bain and the Bateau Phare are moored on Port de la Gare, a few minutes away.
