La Java Paris Guide: Music, Crowd, Dress Code, Getting There

· Updated:

La Java is a basement club for up to 450 people at 105 rue du Faubourg du Temple, in the 10th between République and Belleville, playing house, techno and other electronic club music from Wednesday to Saturday, with concerts early in the evening and the club after 23:00. It has been a dance hall since 1923, which makes it one of the few Paris clubs where the room itself is part of the story.

A dance hall with a hundred years behind it

You reach La Java through the Galerie du Palais du Commerce, an Art Deco arcade with stained glass and wrought-iron staircases, listed as a historic monument in 1994. The club is downstairs. It opened in 1923 as a bal, and the names that went through it are hard to beat: Django Reinhardt, Jean Gabin and Fréhel played there, and Maurice Chevalier and Édith Piaf started out on its stage. Later it spent years as a home for Latin music before turning to electronic nights. The venue now calls itself the oldest club in France and belongs to the Syndicat Culture Nuit, the body that represents Paris night venues.

None of that makes it a museum. The room is low-ceilinged and standing, with a bar along one side, and it gets hot and busy when it's full. Resident Advisor describes La Java as a storied venue that has found new life in contemporary club culture and points to the more playful side of its music. That is a fair summary: the bookings lean towards house, techno and party-minded club sounds rather than hard, dark techno.

How an evening works

Evenings are split in two. Concerts run from about 19:30 to 23:00, then the room is turned over for the club: Thursday from 23:00 to 06:00, Friday and Saturday from midnight to 07:00, and Wednesdays depending on the programme. Each club night is run by a different crew, so the crowd and the sound change from one date to the next. In November 2026 the agenda had La Gomorrhée's second birthday, Connect Chicken, a baile funk night on the eve of the 11 November holiday, Club Mate, Revival, House Archive, Ipséité, Born 2 Bounce and Club Armor. Each night has its own page with the line-up and start time, so pick your date by the crew rather than the day of the week.

Dress code and the door

La Java doesn't publish a dress code. What it does state is that its nights are inclusive, and that anyone who doesn't respect that is refused at the door or asked to leave. In practice, dress to dance in a crowded, warm basement: light layers, comfortable shoes and not much to carry. If you're planning a birthday or coming as a group, message us on WhatsApp with the date and how many you are, and we'll tell you how that night usually works.

Getting there and getting home

Rue du Faubourg du Temple climbs from République to Belleville and is lined with bars that are busy well before midnight, so it's easy to meet up nearby first. Belleville (lines 2 and 11) and Goncourt (line 11) are the closest metro stops, and République is a short walk. The last metros get to the end of their lines at about 02:15 on Fridays and Saturdays and about 01:15 on other nights, so on club nights you'll usually go home either by night bus, with the N12 and N23 stopping nearby, or at closing time on Fridays and Saturdays, when the metro has started again.
