Bal Chavaux Montreuil Guide: Music, Crowd, Getting There from Paris

· Updated:

Bal Chavaux is a concert and party hall in Montreuil, just east of Paris, set in the town's former Méliès cinema on Place Jacques-Duclos, right by Croix de Chavaux station on metro line 9. Its main room holds about 500 people for gigs and club nights by event, with hip-hop, electronic music, hyper-pop and queer club nights on the programme.

Why people cross the périphérique for it

Bal Chavaux is one of the newer reasons to go out in Montreuil. Time Out Paris announced it for autumn 2025: the team behind La Marbrerie, the town's other music venue, took over the old Méliès cinema, which had stood empty for about ten years after the cinema moved in 2015. The building dates from the early 1970s, and it still feels like a theatre. The old main auditorium has become the hall for gigs and parties, and two smaller rooms are used for dance classes with the neighbouring Pina Bausch conservatoire. What you get is a room with real height and a stage, with the metro at the door.

What kind of nights to expect

There's no fixed weekly night at Bal Chavaux: each date is its own event, and the format changes a lot. The autumn of 2026 shows the spread. On 23 October it hosted an electronic night with Koudlam, La Mverte and Franky Gogo. On 31 October came a queer Halloween ball on the theme of horror films, with electro, house and dark disco DJ sets, drag performances and projections until 5am. The coming weeks lean towards live music: L.A. Guns on Tuesday 24 November at 7pm, then Schlaasss and Corto Malaise on Wednesday 9 December, with dates announced into January 2027. So before you plan the trip, check whether your date is a gig, which usually lets you catch the metro home, or a club night, which won't.

The crowd changes with the night, from rock fans at a gig to the queer and electronic crowd of a club night. Bal Chavaux doesn't publish a dress code, but some nights have a theme, like the horror-film ball, so look at the event first.

Getting there from Paris

This is the easy part. Bal Chavaux is at the foot of Croix de Chavaux, the second-to-last stop of metro line 9 before Mairie de Montreuil. Line 9 crosses Paris from Pont de Sèvres in the west, through Trocadéro, Franklin D. Roosevelt, République, Oberkampf and Nation, so from much of the city it's a single train with no change. If you're staying in the west, near Trocadéro, you'll ride almost the whole line, so leave a little earlier than you would for a club in the centre. Some listings give an avenue de la Résistance address: it's the same building, the former Méliès cinema at Croix de Chavaux. Le Chinois, a bar, gig venue and club, is a short walk away, and La Marbrerie is one stop further at Mairie de Montreuil, so you can plan a whole Montreuil night without going back into Paris.

Getting back to Paris after the last metro

The return is what needs planning. The RATP gives the end of metro service at about 1:15am from Sunday to Thursday and about 2:15am on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before public holidays, measured at the end of the line, so check in the RATP app when the last line 9 train leaves Croix de Chavaux towards Paris. After a gig you'll usually make it. After a club night that runs to 5am, you won't: Noctilien night buses run from roughly 12:30am to 5:30am and accept a Navigo pass, and the other options are a taxi or the first metro of the morning. Work out your route before you go in, while your phone still has battery.
